Dr. Wang Wei received the Zhang Siying Best Young Paper Award of the 25th Chinese Control and Decision Conference

On May 25 to 27, 2013, at the annual meeting of the 25th Control and Decision Conference of China, which was held in Guiyang, China, paper Globally Adaptive Path Tracking Control of Underactuated Ships, which was composed by Wang Wei(First author), a teacher of Automation Department of Tsinghua University, and Huang Jiangshuai, a PhD of Nanyang Technological University, got the Zhang Siying Best Young Paper Award.

In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive control strategy is developed to force an underactuated ship to follow a predefined path, despite the presence of unknown system parameters and environmental disturbances induced by wave, wind and ocean current. The techniques involved in the design and analysis include using the backstepping, parameter projection techniques and a traverse function. It is shown that with the authors’ proposed controller, the reference path can be tracked globally with an arbitrarily small tracking error.
