Interdisciplinary Academic Forum of Intelligent Unmanned Systems Successfully held in Tsinghua University

On 5th of November, the interdisciplinary academic forum of intelligent unmanned systems was successfully held in Tsinghua University. Cheng Wu, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the intelligent unmanned systems research center in Tsinghua university, lenovo's chief technology officer and senior vice President Yong Rui, founder of the software Thunder and Hesongyuanwang fund’s founding partner Hao Cheng, Keda Xunfei’s senior vice President and co-founder Tao Jiang and the original president of the Intel China Research Institute of Science and Technology Ganda Wu got together, with about 400 teachers and students to talk deeply into the frontier of intelligent unmanned systems.
Under the title of  “intelligent manufacturing with new generation of artificial intelligence”, Cheng Wu delivered a theme report, which was pointed out the importance, driving force and innovation of new generation of artificial intelligence. Also he emphasized that new generation of artificial intelligence features more on interdisciplinary cooperation and industry-leading integration of industry and university . Artificial intelligence is an overwhelming technology and it will have a decisive effect on the trend of industry.

In the discussion of “ predict the future and talk across disciplines”, Yong Rui said that “vertical industry plus artificial intelligence” was the trend for  future development of artificial intelligence. Tao Jiang thought the intelligent breakthroughs in the future were to change the world in the professional fields, such as education, medical treatment and so forth. Hao Cheng pointed out that the Internet could solve problems which were information asymmetry, and artificial intelligence could directly reduce the product cost, especially in the field of civil robots. Concerning with the field of intelligent driving, Gansha Wu thought that countries around the world were at the same starting line in algorithms, but Chinese government gave great support in laws and infrastructure constructions which would promote intelligent driving innovation from the aspects of technology and engineering applications.

Cultivation of innovative talents is the key to promote a new generation of artificial intelligence. When speaking of the layout for innovative talents’ cultivation, opinions were discussed and shared by all people attended. Cheng Wu argued that since promoting a new generation of artificial intelligence needs all kinds of talents, innovation was the most important thing for Ph.D. candidates,  which was not just publishing a paper on the theory, but also aimed at technological innovation.

Focusing on the basic theory and technology application of intelligent unmanned systems,  two sub-forums were held in the campus cafes. Professor Xiangyang Ji, Professor Ling Wang of our Department and other professors, experts, talents from industries sat and talked frontier science and technology, exchanging of innovative ideas in a warm environment.

In the September of 2017, the intelligent unmanned systems research center was established and affiliated to the Department of Automation. Cheng Wu and Jie Zhou took the place of director and vice director, respectively. The center is aimed at national 2.0 major projects of artificial intelligence, including all of the field such as intelligent unmanned factories and service robots, to build the international first-class intelligent unmanned systems research center.
