On February 28, 2020, the Department of Automation received approval from IEEE Education Society to establish the IEEE Education Society Beijing Section Chapter. The Chapter is a branch established jointly by various professional and technical associations of IEEE and the regional chapters. This chapter is the first section chapter of IEEE Education Society in China.

The Department of Automation, led by Professor Zhang Tao, Chair of the Department, has been preparing for the establishment of the Chapter since December 2019, including writing the organization mission and work plan of the Chapter, applying to IEEE Beijing Section, and communicating and discussing with experts in education from many universities. After that, the Applicant submitted the application on the IEEE Society website, and 12 members of the IEEE Education Society Beijing Section voted online to provide supports. Finally, the Chapter was approved to be established by IEEE Beijing Section and IEEE Education Society online.

IEEE Education Society focuses on theoretical and practical researches in the field of educational technology, and holds annual conferences such as FIE (Frontiers in Education) around the world. The Department of Automation has always attached great importance to teaching. The establishment of the IEEE Education Society Beijing Section Chapter, led by the department, aims to collaborate with educators from sister universities to promote the globalization of education and teaching, and to enhance the international influence of education in China.
